Ancient Classe: Mosaics, History and Nature

A few kilometres from Ravenna lies Classe, the ancient imperial harbour that once housed the most powerful fleet of the Roman Empire. Today this area is home to one of the least-known yet most extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage sites: the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe, an absolute masterpiece of early Christian mosaic art. Nearby, the Classis Ravenna Museum tells three thousand years of the city's history through artefacts, reconstructions and multimedia installations. A day away from the crowds of the city centre, at a slow pace, surrounded by nature and the authentic flavours of Romagna.

Day Programme

9:30 AM – Arrival and self-guided visit to the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe (Via Romea Sud 224, Classe). Audio guides available on site: Italian, English, French, German and Spanish (€1/person, purchased at the ticket office)

10:00 AM approx. – Self-guided visit to Classis Ravenna Museum (Via Classense 29). Over 700 artefacts, multimedia installations and an extraordinary reconstruction of late-antique Ravenna. Audio guide available on site: Italian and English (€1/person)

12:30 PM approx. – Lunch at La Campaza Restaurant (Via Romea 395, Fosso Ghiaia): set menu of meat or fish (choice required at the time of booking). Drinks and coffee included. Children and teenagers under 18 may order from the à la carte menu directly at the restaurant (cost paid on site)

Afternoon – Free visit to the Stork Park: a natural oasis with white storks, flamingos and wildlife, set within a 60,000 m² park. Followed by a free walk through the Ancient Pine Forest of Classe, a centuries-old woodland overlooking the Adriatic
